PREGNANCY PAIN PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT CLASS

PREGNANCY PAIN PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT CLASS

For most women, the period of time when a mother is carrying her child should be one of the most memorable and joyous periods of her life. However, for many women the period they were with child was an unpleasant experience because of "PAIN". In fact, the overall prevalence of back pain during the 9-month period is thought to be approximately 50%. Pain can begin before week 12 and continue up to 6 months after delivery.
It is important to understand that the back and pelvic pain issues experienced during pregnancy are not the result of an ibuprofen deficiency (or any other painkiller, for that matter). Rather, there are treatable physical causes of this discomfort.
"So what can I do about it?" you may say. Providing you with that answer is the aim of this class. We will discuss why you experience these symptoms, safe and natural treatments, instruction on "baby safe" exercises, management of incontinence, and other problems common in pregnant women.

Research has shown a direct link between the amount of back/pelvic pain experienced in pregnancy and the mother's outlook on the pregnancy as a whole (including the desire for more children). Getting control of this issue can help you to have a more pleasant pregnancy and the ability to better enjoy this amazing experience.

Summer sports and forearm/wrist problems

With summer sports in full swing, we are seeing an increase in the number of patients with "tennis elbow." In this instance, we are treating a martial artist with a chronic case of this problem (years in duration), characterized by very sharp pain on the outside of the forearm. By utilizing our combination of treatments, we were able to get him functional in a matter of days. Similar assessments and protocols can be used to help patients with nerve entrapments (such as carpal tunnel) and well as numerous other forearm problems.

Foot pain relief

Some of the most desperate patients we encounter are those with chronic foot pain. You don't have to live with this discomfort. In most cases, conservative management is the most effective route of treatment. In this example, we are treating the structure often involved in plantar fasciitis. The method of treatment pictured is Active Release Techniques (learn more at www.activerelease.com).

Functional Exam

One of the unique forms of assessments we utilize at ACR are what known as functional exams. With these, we are able to accurately identify causes of problems by watching patients perform certain movements. Here, we are examining problems in the lower extremity (foot, ankle, knee, and hip issues). With this particular test, I am looking for certain movement patterns at the above listed areas as this patient raises and lowers himself on the step. By utilizing functional exams, both the Dr and patient are able to identfy abnormalities, as well as track progress.

Feed the Need 5k

We have donated our services to provide soft tissue release for several local running and walking events. Here, we are helping participants at the 1st annual Feed the Need 5k, benefiting local food pantries. We had a great time and received great feedback from the runners and the organizers.

ACR Newsletter - Fun in the Sun Summer Safety Tips

Hello to all! I hope your summer is going well and you had a wonderful week. We send out periodic newsletters with relevant information for current sports, weather, etc. We have been getting many inquires on hydration and recognizing signs of “over-doing it” while exercising in the heat. Below are a few tips
Hydration: “oh, I’ve got a cramp…someone grab a banana!” Believe it or not, by far the most common reason for leg cramps is due to dehydration, not a potassium deficiency. So you may say, “how do I know if I’m drinking enough water?” Well, there’s a simple formula to figure that out: your weight in pounds divided by 2 = the minimum number of ounces you should drink per day. For example, a 200 lb person should drink 100 oz of water per day. However, if you are very active you will require more than this. As a rule of thumb, never restrict access to water while exercising in the heat.
Lightning awareness: Summer sports are a staple of the American family summer, but can be dangerous at times. Many people aren’t aware that lightning can occur miles away from a storm front. I myself have come dangerously close to a lightning strike during a sunny day, with a storm far in the distance. Take precautions to avoid situations that place you or your children at increased risk of a strike. Discontinue sporting events at the first sign of lightning, particularly in venues that have no tall structures anywhere near them.
Recognizing signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke:
Heat Exhaustion – results from inadequate replacement of fluids lost through sweating. Usually, the victim of heat exhaustion will collapse and exhibit profuse sweating, pale skin, mildly elevated temperature, dizziness, hyperventilation, and rapid pulse. Symptoms will include disorientation, light-headedness, and impaired athletic performance. Treatment requires replacing fluids (either ingestion or intravenously) and being placed in a cool environment. Be sure to consult with a trained medical professional as to the status of this person.

Heat Stroke – Unlike cramps and Heat Exhaustion, heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency. It is characterized by sudden collapse with loss of consciousness; flushed, hot skin with diminished sweating; shallow breathing; rapid, strong pulse; and a core temperature of 106 deg F or above. The heat stroke victim experiences a breakdown of the temperature regulation systems of the body and loses the ability to dissipate heat through sweating.
Heat Stroke can occur suddenly and without warning. Every effort should be made as quickly as possible to reduce the core temperature (however, the person should not be immersed in a cold water bath). Strip off as much clothing as possible, sponge with cool water, and fan with a towel while in the person is in transit/waiting for transportation. It is imperative that the victim be transported to the hospital as soon as possible.

I hope these are helpful. Have fun and be safe this summer!

Testimonial from 54 year old female patient with chronic neck, shoulder and mid-back pain

"I sought help for over 30 years to relieve the chronic pain I was in. After a thorough exam and personal history, Dr. Iodice found my pain was caused by my TMJ and the clinching of my teeth for many years. With therapy and a few exercises, the tightness (and pain!) are gone. I cannot believe 8 other medical professionals missed this condition.....You are really short changing yourself if you don't give Dr. Iodice a try! The next Miracle could happen to you!"

Situations like this really make my job wonderful! This patient felt hopeless. But with the unique combination of assesments and treatments offered at ACR, were were able to accurately identify the causes of her problems, thereby alleviating her symptoms.
